Install birdie for Ubuntu 15.04

While looking for a twitter app other than gwibber and the twitter webpage, I decided to try birdie (  Yes, being a good little engineer I could have cloned the github source ( and compiled my own copy but then I’d have to keep it up to date if I wanted any new upstream features.  They provide a PPA from the launchpad ( but that doesn’t work out of the box for Ubuntu 15.04.   As of this post, the birdie team is building stable packages specifically for Ubuntu 14.04.  Here’s what was required to use the PPA in Ubuntu 15.04:

First, add the apt repo for the birdie team’s stable builds.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:birdie-team/stable

Because 15.04 (vivid) is not yet a target, we need to update the repo source file to point at the 14.04 (trusty) release.

sudo sed -i 's/vivid/trusty/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/birdie-team-ubuntu-stable-vivid.list

Now, run update and install birdie.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install birdie

So far, I like birdie better than any other apps I’ve tried.
